Japanese Fastfood (弁当)

Japan is crazy about food. You think France is gourmet’s land? Think again. The Japanese spend the highest percentage of GDP (over 20%) on food of every developed country, including France. The diversity you get in Japan is astonishing. They don’t have everything, e.g. it’s hard to get German food like dark bread. Still, you won’t trust your eyes when you walk through デパチカ (depachika).

Then there are 弁当 (bento), which is a Japanese kind of fast food. The meals are prepared within 5-15 minutes and you can take them home in a box. They cost about the same as American fast food in Japan, from $5 to $7. Compared to ordinary fast food, these bento are highly sophisticated. And they taste very good, probably better than many types of fast food.

  1. I’ve just started making my own bento. It’s too much fun and I’m feeling healthier. You are right about the comparison to France.
