As you will see, Germany’s current problem is not that it doesn’t build enough new roads, but that it doesn’t maintain the existing large network properly. This is the result of the government’s attempt to keep budget deficits under control. The constant increases in pension expenditures are offset by reductions in education and infrastructure expenditure. Of course, “politically important” projects like new Autobahns in East Germany are not affected.
